American hip-hop legend Dr. Dre has revealed that he is using artificial intelligence (AI) in the process of making new music, arguing that the technology should be viewed as a creative tool rather than a threat to artists.
The veteran producer and rapper said he believes opposition to AI largely comes from people who struggle to create or are unwilling to adapt to new technology.
“I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people that have trouble creating,” Dre said, stressing that AI can open new possibilities for musicians and producers.
According to Dre, the rapid development of AI should encourage artists to learn and experiment with emerging technologies instead of rejecting them. He described the technology as “a new tool for creativity,” suggesting that artists who understand how to use it could find new ways of developing music.
“Some people are afraid of learning new things,” he added, highlighting the importance of adapting to technological changes in an industry that has continually evolved alongside new recording and production tools.
Dre’s comments come amid a growing debate in the music industry over the use of AI, particularly around questions of originality, copyright, artists’ voices and whether artificial intelligence could eventually replace aspects of human creativity.
For the influential producer, however, AI is not necessarily a replacement for musicians but another instrument that can be incorporated into the creative process. His embrace of the technology signals how even established artists are beginning to explore AI as the music industry enters a new technological era.
